Most people who read non-fiction books don't actually learn anything. They just get better at recognizing ideas they've already seen.
When you read a book or a summary, the ideas make sense. The author has already done the hard work of organizing the thoughts. You follow along, nodding, and when you reach the end, you feel smarter. If someone mentions the book at a party, you can say, "Yes, I know that one. It's about X."
But if pressed to explain it—to really break down the core concepts without the author's scaffolding holding you up—you usually can't. And if asked how you've applied it to your own life, the answer is almost always the same: you haven't.
Psychologists call this the illusion of competence. Recognition feels like recall, and recall feels like mastery. But they are entirely different things.
The Test of Application
The only way to actually master a concept is to apply it. Not in a theoretical way, but to a specific, detailed situation — real or hypothetical, historical or professional.
Schools test understanding with multiple-choice questions. But life doesn't give you four options. In life, you have a blank page. The real test of whether you've understood an idea is whether you can explain what would break if that idea were removed from a given scenario. If you can't, you haven't mastered the concept. You just recognized it.
We realized this was the fundamental flaw in how people use our platform. They were reading summaries and chatting with the AI, but they weren't forced to apply the knowledge. They were still passive consumers.
So we built something different.
Knowledge Mastery
We've introduced a new system we call Knowledge Mastery. It's a simple feedback loop, but it changes the dynamic from passive consumption to active mental model building.
Here's how it works: the system extracts the core concepts from a book. You pick the ones you want to master. Then, it gives you a blank text box and a challenge: "Illustrate this concept by explaining its impact on a specific situation or system. What would change if this concept were removed?"

You have to write it out. Long-form. No multiple choice.
The scenario doesn't have to be from your personal life — it can be a historical event, a business case, a scientific system, or a hypothetical. What matters is that you demonstrate the concept's necessity: you understand it well enough to show what breaks without it.
Then, an LLM evaluates your answer. It doesn't just check if you used the right words. It grades you on two dimensions: concept accuracy (did you understand the idea?) and application quality (is this a specific, illuminating scenario, or just generic fluff?).
If you get it right, you've mastered the concept. If you get it wrong, the system doesn't give you the answer. It gives you a hint—a guiding question—and makes you try again.
